Kalki Koechlin is the only film actress in Bollywood who has the origin of France. Her father is an Indian while her mother is from France. Since both her parents were the followers of Sri Aurobindo, she settled down in India in a village called Kallatty near the popular hill station of Tamil Nadu called Ooty. Her ancestor was Maurice Koechlin who was the famous structural engineer who designed the popular landmark of Paris called Eiffel Tower, while her father used to design the hang fligers and the micro-light aircrafts. She was born and brought up in Ooty and went to Hebron School and attended the university of London wherein she studied theatre and drama at famous institute called Goldsmith. Talking about her personal life, she is married to popular director Anurag Kashyap in 2011 but later in 2013, she separated as the couple had few issues.

When she returned to India, she headed to Mumbai to pursue her acting career and soon was seen taking up a couple of modelling assignments for taking up a number of TV commercials. Later was spotted by Anurag Kashyap who casted her for his movie Dev D along with Abhay Deol playing the character of a prostitute. Her performance was applauded giving her even the Filmfare Award under the category of Best Supporting Actress in the year 2010. She then got a couple of movies including Shaitan, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, That Girl in Yellow Boots, My Friend Pinto Maggie, Trishna, Shanghai, Ek Thi Daayan, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, etc. Her upcoming movies include Happy Ending, Margarita With a Straw, Jiah aur Jiah and Severing Ties.

Apart from doing a number of movies, she is also known for her love for theatres. She has produced, written and acted in a number of plays in India. One of the recent, plays include the one called Colour Blind, which she wrote and produced along with acting in it. The other plays include Hair, The Real Inspector Hound and Trivial Disasters, while her popular play Skeleton Woman has even helped her win a prestigious MetroPlus Playwright award in the year 2009. As far as awards are concerned, she has won a number of awards including all the awards for Shaitan under the category of Best Actress including Screen, Stardust, IIFA, Filmfare and others, while was nominated for the best actress in supporting role for movies including Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani but failed to get the awards.
