BHumi
Bhumi Pednekar recently talks about getting trolled on Social Media. Talking about it all says – “When I had started off, I would get affected by it because there are people that don’t have the nicest things to say and you don’t really understand the medium very well. You are like, ‘Oh my God, why are people getting so personal?’ But now, I don’t really care. I have realised that my happiness depends on me.”

Bhumi Further adds – “If I listen to that one bad opinion then I have to be really stupid because I have ten people telling me really good things. Maybe early on, I tried looking for validation through my Instagram or social media but now I don’t do it. I feel like our world is actually very large, especially for actors. When you see a film that does so well at the box office, it doesn’t really tally with your social media numbers. Or vice versa. I don’t take it seriously.”

Right now, Bhumi is shooting in Dehradun for Badhaai Do, a standalone sequel to 2018 hit Badhaai Ho. She will play a PT teacher in the film, which is directed by Harshvardhan Kulkarni and also stars Rajkummar Rao as a cop. She has been sharing pictures from the sets on Instagram, introducing their characters, Sumi and Shardul.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar

Jayeshbhai Jordaar is one of the most-anticipated films of 2021. Jayeshbhai Jordaar is a movie starring Ranveer Singh. Directing the project is debutant writer-director Divyang Thakkar whose script has been hailed as a ‘miracle script’ by Ranveer himself.

Talking more about the movie, Divyang Thakkar says – “I think on the other side of this pandemic, as far as going to the movies is concerned, we’re all craving that community experience where we are entertained together, laugh and cry along with absolute strangers, that is the experience we are all craving for. And I hope that Jayeshbhai Jordaar manages to deliver on that front because it is designed primarily as an entertainer.”

He adds, “Beyond entertainment what I really hope for is, that if we are able to question somewhere, what does it really take to be a Jordaar mard? and you know, if we can somewhere, with Jayeshbhai Jordaar, manage to break that stereotype of a typical action hero and just start a dialogue on our perception of masculinity, then I feel we’ve achieved what we’ve set out to do.”

Jayeshbhai
Divyang says – “You know when I was writing Jayeshbhai Jordaar, I was not thinking about who would eventually make it, at what scale would it be mounted, who would be starring in it, I just wrote it for the pure joy of writing and creating that story. I would like that honesty and that excitement to carry forward in my future work as well. To not worry about the outcome but just to enjoy the process of writing and creating.”

He further adds – “So, that would be my wish and another wish is to just be grateful, forever. What has happened to me is almost like a fable, how I’ve gotten to tell the story and tell the story in the purest form that I wanted to tell it in. Without any delusions or without any compromises. For it to happen, the way it has happened in Jayeshbhai Jordaar is nothing short of a miracle for me. To count my blessings, to everyone who sort of has enabled me to tell this story.”

Sharman Joshi : I still feel as an outsider in film industry

Sharman Joshi
Sharman Joshi says – “I still feel like an outsider,” and adds, “I understand that there is a certain monogamy of certain generations of families that have been in business, and tomorrow my children would enjoy the fruit of my presence in the Hindi cinema. I have established relationships with people, and they will get the advantage. It is about the time spent in the business and familiarity. There have been experiences and adventures that people share.”

Sharman Joshi tells – “I understand that but I do feel a little sorry for me sometimes, that I was not connected to a film industry family. I was born into a theatre family, though, so I have plenty of experience on that front.”

Sharman Joshi talks about his observations and tells – “The first time I went on a film set, it was to shoot for my film Godmother. The whole environment was different (from theatre). I did not know how to spend my time in a vanity van. I was taken away with all the frenzy on the sets, with everyone shouting. In theatre when you are performing, there is plenty of peace before you begin. Here it is chaotic and here you are in the scene.”

Sharman Joshi further shares – “My background in theatre always made me feel outside of the film world because their way of thinking and operating was different and I think the theatre scene was very professional. When I first started out I realised that people felt offended if you asked for a script, and I couldn’t fathom why! I didn’t have anyone to guide me and tell me this was the way the film industry functioned, and that I had to show certain faith.”

Neetu Chandra

Neetu Chandra shares – “Aisa nahi hai ki kaam nahi mil raha tha. I was doing a lot of theatre. I don’t come from a background where everything is handed to me on a platter. But I still did big films like Garam Masala (2005), Traffic Signal (2007), Oye Lucky Lucky Oye (2008) and 13B (2009) After my father passed away in 2009, I became more serious about other things in life.”

Neetu Chandra reveals – “I started traveling the world post 2015. I finished a Greek film, I am doing a Korea TV series as well and I have a few Hollywood films, and one of which is Never Back Down: Revolt, the fourth film in the Never Back Down franchise in which I play a pivotal role.”

The film is directed by Kellie Madison and Neetu Chandra says her skills with Taekondo came in handy for her role in the film, in fact her character was written around her skills, which happens very rarely.

Neetu Chandra concludes by saying – “I always believe in quality more than quantity. Hum Bihari-yo ko branding karna nahi aata hai. We don’t know how to brand ourselves. We know how to work very hard and we are good at what we do. But I knew that am going to make global opportunities for myself. Now things are falling into place. This is just the beginning. I have just started and I am here to stay,”

Janhvi Kapoor
Janhvi Kapoor talks about debut Dhadak and is she is deliberately sticking to the potboilers. Talking about all Janhvi Kapoor says – “I am actually excited about the variety I am getting to explore. Aisa nahi ki consciously nahi, voh bhi art hi hai, with all nautanki, maza aata hai. My aspirations, goal is also to look good, have fun, I would be very happy to sing and dance, but at the end of the day, they are projects I would enjoy watching as well. I like these characters I am playing, and find them challenging, which are offering something to me, and me to them.”

Talking about thoughts on race and competition and she being  slotted in with her contemporaries in industry, Janhvi Kapoor says — “I focus on my work and do what I love to the best of my abilities. I am looking for opportunities where I can be the best. Competition means different to different people. It may not be necessarily box office numbers. If you know, you know, maybe it’s an award, or the feeling that you are loved by audiences. When you have that, you just know. When they own you, like they owned my mom (late actor Sridevi), you feel you belong to them.”

Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar says reflecting on his journey – “The challenge lies in maintaining yourself. Maintaining yourself in the industry is a big challenge. You will not believe that entering the film industry is still easier, but to maintain yourself in the industry and to keep up and cope up with everything going on, and be there in the industry, is a very difficult job.”

Akshay Kumar shares – “I follow what my father taught me — keep working hard. Kal ki chinta na karo, aapne aap sab kuch theek hona shuru ho jayega (Stop worrying about the future, everything will get sorted out).”

Akshay Kumar continues and says – “A lot of times, I have seen how the movie that I know is not good works. On the other hand there are times when I know the film is good, and yet it doesn’t work. God has his own way of working and rewarding you. Jahaan dena hai wahaan kabhi kabhi nahi deta aur jahaan nahi dena wahaan de deta hai.”

Today, Akshay Kumar has developed a reputation of backing stories that have hues of patriotism and nationalism, besides films with socially-relevant content. “I do films that are responsible and also the films that are commercial. I am not a teacher. I do films I like, and the messages I like. Sometimes there is a message, and sometimes there is no message. I do different types of films and I want to continue doing them in the future,” he continued.

“I don’t want to be a teacher,” the superstar asserted, adding: “I get associated with the message I believe in. I made a film on sanitary pads, and did one on the importance of toilets. (I) Also made one on science. I have made different types of films. There is also Housefull, which has no message, and where the message is just to laugh,” added the actor, who was last seen in Laxmii, which was released on OTT.

Mithila Palkar

Mithila Palkar says – “When digital came along, the kind of content that was being made was what I wanted to do. I am glad that I got to be a part of that digital revolution. Personally I lack the vision or foresight about what this would have eventually become but I am glad where it stands now. I am glad that the internet is now a medium of entertainment. I just viewed it as an opportunity.”

With the boom in the digital space, more and more actors from Bollywood, those that have so far stayed away from it, are showing keen interest in it. So what happens with people like her?

Mithila-Palkar

Mithila Palkar shares – “I think this is the most interesting time to be a part of the industry because we all are in the same playground, which is makes it most exciting. That is what we have all struggled for so many years and it is great that we are finally here to tell stories that we want to. We don’t want to tell stories of a hero and heroine. We have started telling stories about people. It is great that we can all collaborate and all mediums are intermingling.”

Mithila Palkar further adds – “Will that stop me from doing films? No. Just because I do OTT does not mean I will not take films up. I will obviously want to see myself on the 70mm screen. It is now amazing to see that we are all working together and there is no films actor and OTT actor demarcation. It is all going to change and it is already changing.”

Shamita Shetty says – “I have been through ups and downs and it has made me a stronger and who I am today. I have no regrets. I am thankful for the life I have and most of all, to be working even after 20 years is big deal. I have not done as much work as I would have liked to, but, at least, I am given the opportunity to be a part of the industry and I am grateful for that.”

Shamita Shetty also tells- “I have people who keep me grounded and in touch with reality. I am in touch with people in industry, who have been in my life for years. The industry can be a fake world and you can lose yourself here, if you are not careful.”

Shamita Shetty further adds – “When you are alone and trapped in your home, no matter how much money or fancy stuff you have, nothing matters. Nothing can get you out of that situation. It makes you think, what is important in life. I made a few changes and kept people and things that mattered to me. I tried to get rid of negativity. Though I live alone, luckily, I had family close-by and I spent quality time with them”.

She says – “On the work front, I was grateful that I got to work on a show during the pandemic. I was dying to get out and start working. We followed all Covid protocols while shooting in Kolkata.”

Shamita Shetty reminisces – “When I was younger, it was different but now I enjoy the peace and quiet. I remember by fortieth birthday celebration was a surprise party. Shilpa (Shetty; sister) and Raj (Kundra; brother-in-law) whisked me away to Phuket, Thailand, and had organised everything. It was just so wonderful and amazing.”

A.R. Rahman
A R Rahman shares – “I think I am pretty happy with the amount of movies I am doing now. I work with people with whom I get a good vibe from. That is why I keep working with the same people again and again. I didn’t care to accept many other offers because you need to concentrate on quality.”

Along with a rich discography, the musician also has a number of awards to his name– six National Film Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award. Talking about whether such laurels do spell doom on someone’s career, A R Rahman says, “As long as somebody has a neutral mind and you don’t get carried away by awards… The quest for learning keeps going on. My first film (Roja, 1992) won a National award and, people said you won the National award, do you need to continue? You can stop now.”

A.R. Rahman

A R Rahman further adds-

“Awards are important but it is not the only destination. Music cannot be judged in one hearing and the intention of the music is much more than the creator. It is about how people take it. The joy of composing and performing is only limited by your physical health, nothing else.”

a r rahman

Almost 30 years in the industry now, Rahman is one of the most successful composer in the country today. So what does he attribute this long successful ever growing career to?

He concludes by saying – “Everything, all my success is a blessing for me. I am always a learner. At every stage of your life when you feel you have done enough, every 3-4 years there is a shift that happens. There are new needs which happens, new sound, the society changes and you need to embrace and not complain that ‘oh those days we did this’. One needs to get rid of that. We have to respect everybody’s needs.”

Music maestro A R Rahman ’s contribution to the Hindi cinema music is enormous, yet somehow over the past few years, he seems to have cut back on work in Bollywood films. The Oscar winning composer says he is rather content with the kind of work that he associates himself with now.

Neena Gupta

Neena Gupta says – “OTT ka good luck ho gaya Covid ki wajah se. Kitne logon ne kitna kuch dekha OTT platforms par. Moreover, a number of producers were suffering due to monetary loss as there were no theatrical releases. They must have borrowed money and would have to pay interest. Releasing a film on OTT was a good way out for many of them. Instead of my film being stuck in a can, I would be happy to see it release online.”

Neena Gupta admits – “I wrote a book on my life and hope people enjoy it as well. As people were at home, they could enjoy and explore different genres of content and not just the same kinds of stories. OTT has helped a lot in that sense. Agar OTT, nahin hota toh, whatever I worked on wouldn’t have existed perhaps.”

She is glad that people all over the world are enjoying a variety of content on OTT, which has opened so many doors for creators, actors and technicians.

With two web shows, Panchayat and Masaba Masaba, Neena Gupta’s acclaimed film, The Last Color, too, got a theatrical release last year, after being to numerous film festivals around the world. Neena Gupta is happy with the response her movie has been receiving, “especially now that it is available on OTT because it feels like it has released all over again. Word-of-mouth for the film has been fabulous. The kind of comments I have got says that people have loved the film and my performance. I think it is important as this is not a potboiler or has popular faces, so such reactions feels good.

Ananya Pandey
Ananya Panday says – “I think I was exposed to social media at a very very young age. So, a lot of my pictures were coming out and I saw a lot of hate at a very young age. There wasn’t one definite moment, I think it was just over the time seeing a lot of this hate and toxicity and negativity around that made me realise. Whenever I would get trolled, I think my parents would get way more affected than I did.”

Ananya Panday adds – “I believe in ignorance is bliss and I also believe in giving love back to the haters because I feel like they are the ones who need it the most. They are probably coming from a place of insecurity or something is lacking in their lives and that’s why they are taking it out on you.”

Actor Ananya Panday who made her Bollywood debut with Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year 2 is one internet sensation. However, being a star kid, she was no different to face the nepotism blow, online hatred and trolls. Shweta Nanda, the daughter of actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, said in an earlier interview that she doesn’t think she has it in her to be a star. “I’m scared of cameras and I’m not good with crowds,” she told Vogue, adding, “I don’t think I have the talent or the face to be a heroine. Trauma can also be a powerful force for positive chance,” she wrote on Instagram stories, adding, “Post-traumatic growth can be transformative. Post-traumatic growth can be powerful.”

Vineet Kumar
Vineet Kumar talks about role of Aadhaar and says – “When I heard the script, I found it very interesting. I signed it after Mukkabaaz. The film is not just about an Aadhaar card and there are deeper meanings of the title. I play a potter in the film. The film delves into their understanding of life and that’s something one needs to do.”

Vineet Kumar further adds – “The situation about an Aadhaar card then arises and the characters then figure out the things as per their levels of understanding and education. It is made with the right intention and will make you laugh and cry at the same time. There is nothing shown that should be problematic and it has received much appreciation at MAMI and BUSAN film festivals.”

Talking about Vineet Kumar’s learning from Mukkabaaz, he says – “Before Mukkabaaz, it was a very different struggle for me and I had not attained what I came in this city for. So, I started writing it and it took me 4-5 years to do so. But the film, after release, has certainly managed to give back almost 10 years of my life. After the film, I have more options and I am free to experiment. Yes, I am now learning different things and that experience is like a bank for me.”

Talking about OTT and more, Vineet Kumar says – “I have also grown up on the kinds of films that everyone around me has seen in his/her childhood. So that memory is still alive. Only later in life, I started exploring different kinds of cinema. So, I want to focus on maintaining a balance. My upcoming Tamil film ‘Thiruttu Payale 2’ is a commercial film. As far as OTT is concerned, I want to explore it more if I get good opportunities as you can have more screen time on that medium.”
